A conversation with God
My husband and I are teaching our three-year-old Timothy to pray. As we guide him in prayer, we tell before praying; he needs to close his eyes and clasp his hands together. His 20-month-old sister, Tirzah, would look and try to copy him. Then as my husband would lead Timothy to pray, Tirzah would say the beginning of the prayer “God” and would scream the last word “amen. Then she would look at us with a big smile on her face, knowing she did a good job.
Don’t you wish you were like Tirzah, after praying you are the happiest person alive? Sometimes it can feel like that, and then sometimes, you can't get a word out of your lips. It's like your mind went completely blank? However, there are many things that you could be praying for in your life, but literally, nothing comes to mind. Unfortunately, it happens to the best of us.
In 1st Thessalonians 5:17, the bible tells us to “pray without ceasing.” It is hard when nothing comes to mind. When I deal with this issue, I sometimes associate this with not having the desire to pray. So what do I do? I tell God precisely that, and guess what? He won’t be disappointed by it. He knows exactly what's going in our head before we even speak it. He knows we are trying to pray, which is why we have the Holy Spirit to guide us in our prayer.
Prayer itself is a conversation with God. Most times, when we pray, it’s just a one-sided conversation. We tell God all of our worries, needs and, etc., but we don’t hear God’s part of the conversation. So when nothing comes into our heads regarding what to pray for, maybe we should sit and listen. Listen to what God is saying to us because He is always talking; we, as humans, don’t pay attention. So try turning off the noise and distractions, and listen to God’s voice. In 1st Kings 19: 11-12, “Then He said [to the prophet elijah], “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.’’ God’s voice is quiet, like a whisper in your ear or heart. You will know it's the voice of God because it's not something you would think of.
God wants to listen to your voice and speak to you. If you can't voice your thoughts to Him, listen to Him. Listen to the voice that calms the storms in your life and parts the seas. Listen to the lovesong He sings over you over and over again. Child, He wants to speak to you; you have to open your ears and be patient to hear it.
If you have anything you would like to be prayed over, please comment and let me know. I would love to pray for you.
